About the Orchestra
The Joy of Music
Founded in January 2004 by Kelly Corcoran, the NPO was led from 2004 to 2007, by Mark Putnam. During his tenure as Music Director the orchestra grew to become Nashville's premiere community ensemble, performing concerts of exciting, demanding repertoire for all audiences. During the Fall of 2007, violinist and charter member of the NPO, David Hahn served as Music Director, raising community awareness and support for the orchestra.
The Mission of the NPO
The Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra (NPO), an all-volunteer community orchestra featuring amateur and professional players from throughout Middle Tennessee, is proud to play its part in enriching the already vibrant Nashville arts community. Our mission is to offer area orchestral musicians with opportunities to perform while providing high-quality symphonic music free of charge to a wide variety of audiences.
This ensemble offers players of differing levels and backgrounds the opportunity to make music together. The Nashville Philharmonic performs a diverse mix of repertoire - different genres and styles anchored in the classical tradition. Players in the Nashville Philharmonic collaborate with the Music Director in making repertoire decisions. The orchestra features area soloists and new music by local composers.

About the Music Director
Chris Norton
Norton earned his doctorate from Louisiana State University, and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music. He studied orchestral conducting with David Effron, choral conducting with John MacDonald, and band conducting with Frank Wickes; additional studies were taken from conducting workshops hosted by the American Symphony Orchestra League and the Conductors Guild. Beyond these experiences, Norton credits the educational benefits of performing for thirty years as a percussionist in professional orchestras under a wide array of conductors.
Dr. Norton is Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at Belmont University. Previous to his appointment to Belmont in 2001, he taught fourteen years at Western Kentucky University.
